The Sawyer tract is located in northeastern North Carolina, approximately five miles northeast of Elizabeth City.

- Rum Swamp Canal (manmade) and Indiantown Creek bisect the site
- Within 3 miles of the Black Bear Sanctuary
- Within 10 miles of the Pasquotank River
- North Carolina's Division of Coastal Management identified wetland restoration (0.9 acres) and enhancement (238.7 acres) potential
- There is also mitigation potential related to re-contouring the man-made canal to mimic a more natural feature
- One of the few wetlands mitigation projects for restoration, enhancement or preservation in the area
